English for Law
This e/Workshop will build your team’s use of professional legal English. We will help your team to overcome their legal English problems and expand their general legal skills depending on the focus your firm/in-house department has. We usually are requested to focus on Contract, Commercial, Employment and Financial Law. And importantly on skills like negotiating, diplomatic language and correspondence. But our workshops are bespoke, which means if you’re in Family, Patent, International or even Criminal law we can tailor what we offer as our trainers have experience/materials covering most disciplines.
Typical e/Workshop content include elements of the following:
- Explaining my job specifically
- The language of legalese (e.g. pertaining to, client
vs. agent, sole mandate, agreement, liability etc)
- Writing contracts – passive voice, “shall” vs. “will”, punctuation.
- Dealing with clients – assertive and diplomatic language
- The language of negotiations/cause and effect “If, then”
ROLE PLAY: Contract negotiation, costs negotiation - Written correspondence – formal emails/letters
- The meaning and use of old-fashioned English such as hereby, thereby, whereby, whereby, herewith, therewith, herein, therein, wherein, etc. How to quickly understand their meaning so as to avoid confusion between them.
- CLOSING EXERCISE: Write a formal letter (email chain among participants)
